399357_3998124113794_2123396203_nI’m very pleased to announce that my painting Gethsemani Abbey (2011) will be used as the cover art for a book due out this April, authored by Rowan Williams, entitled A Silent Action: Engagements With Thomas Merton.  The book will be published by SPCK Publishing of London, England.  The book’s author, Rowan Williams, is best known to the general public as the former Archbishop of Canterbury.  Lord Williams left that office at the end of last year to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

SPCK Publishing is part of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK), the oldest Anglican mission organization, founded in 1698 by Thomas Bray (an Anglican priest), and a small group of friends. I want to thank the people at SPCK for their kindness.  I’m honored to have my painting featured as the cover art for the book!

As regular followers of this blog know, I am a devotee of Gethsemani Abbey and it’s most famous monk, Thomas Merton, so I’m really looking forward to reading the book.   If you would like to visit or go on retreat at Gethsemani, just call them.  All are welcome regardless of gender or creed — simply honor the monastic silence. The Trappist monastery is located just outside Bardstown, Kentucky which is itself a little under an hour south of Louisville, Kentucky.

One bit of trivia — Thomas Merton’s father, Owen Merton, was an accomplished artist.  If you’ve read The Seven Storey Mountain you know Owen was highly regarded as a landscape painter and did some beautiful paintings of the French countryside, England (including Canterbury Cathedral), Bermuda and Long Island.  A large collection of his work is on display at Bellarmine University in Louisville.  I featured Owen’s work on this blog a little over a year ago (Art Out The Wazoo December 10, 2011).

This is a real honor, Robert. And it’s nice to see your talents appreciated halfway around the world, too. Congratulations.
