Corot in Italy

I love Corot’s Italian paintings, especially when the weather here in the Midwest turns cold and rainy.  What I love about Corot’s work, generally, is his use of rich Earth pigments.  It’s worth contemplating that many of those pigments come with Italian names:  Burnt Sienna, Naples Yellow, Raw and Burnt Umber, Venetian Red.  On the way home from our family vacation in Florida this past Spring, I stopped and collected some of the beautiful red soil just south of Montgomery, Alabama.  A small slice of Italy.
