Houck Bridge, Putnam County, Indiana

I realize it’s borderline self-destructive to post one of your own paintings when the prior post was Rembrandt, but that’s just how it worked out.  (Boo hoo.)  This is the Houck Bridge in Putnam County, Indiana, just southwest of Greencastle.  This painting is loosely grouped with the Barn and the Four Arch Bridge (previously posted on this blog) which are just a few minutes down the road from Houck Bridge on the same road.

This road really does contain a lot of cool sites within a very short distance and is well worth checking out if you’re in Putnam County — as you frequently are, I’m sure.  Just up the road from Houck Bridge is Boone Cemetery (where blood relatives of Daniel Boone are interred), situated on a tall hill from which you can look back down on the valley, including this covered bridge.  Beautiful spot.

Really nice piece, Robert. I like the bold strokes and the contrasting lights/darks. I’m curious, about how long does it take for you to produce something like this? Also, what’s your typical canvas size?

Thanks. This one took about 4 hours. I was actually working on it up in Wisconsin. I set it on top of the piano to keep it out of the way, and when we went home I forgot and left it there! When we were back up over Labor Day weekend I brought it home and spent about another half hour finishing it up. I still have to sign it and apply Liquin.

Almost all my stuff is on 9″ x 12″ canvas board. The little boards slide into a slot in my pochade box so they can be transported safely. I really should try out different sizes, but I’ve really grown to love this size. When they’re framed these size paintings have a sort of gem-like quality I like.

Thanks. This one and Ocalla are my two favorites. I can’t exactly remember how to get to Ocalla — that’s the one where there’s a little beach underneath, right?
